“. . .perhaps the most powerful statement of the arts center’s—and Newark’s—success can be glimpsed on warm summer nights, when thousands of people throng its outdoor plaza for a weekly music series that has become Newark’s town social.”

JPMORGAN CHASE SOUNDS OF THE CITY 2005
MAKES NJPAC THE PLACE TO BE THIS SUMMER!

FREE OUTDOOR MUSIC SERIES TO RUN THURSDAY EVENINGS,
JULY 7 – SEPTEMBER 8, IN NJPAC’S THEATER SQUARE

Newark, NJ (June 16, 2005) – The sounds and rhythms of Latin Jazz, Gospel, Hip Hop, R&B, Blues, Funk, Reggae, Salsa, Pop/Rock, Jazz and other ethnic beats will fill the New Jersey Performing Arts Center’s Theater Square this summer when JPMORGAN CHASE SOUNDS OF THE CITY, NJPAC’s acclaimed FREE outdoor music series, kicks off on July 7. Every Thursday evening — July 7-September 8 — from 5:00 – 9:45 PM, three to four groups will entertain the after-work crowd and local residents who made NJPAC “the place to be on Thursdays” when Sounds of the City was introduced seven summers ago. This summer's series is sponsored by JPMorgan Chase with additional support from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Puffin Foundation. Newark Downtown District is co-host of JPMorgan Chase Sounds of the City.

"We are pleased to be the title sponsor of JPMorgan Chase Sounds of the City 2005, a free summer music festival at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center," said Frederick W. Hill, executive vice president, Marketing and Communications, JPMorgan Chase & Co. "Sounds of the City is an integral part of JPMorgan Chase's 'Summer Arts Series' which provides free entertainment at hundreds of venues throughout the metropolitan area. It's our way of thanking the communities where we do business by showcasing the best of music, the arts and other cultural events in our markets."

JPMorgan Chase Sounds of the City 2005 fires up on July 7 with the Gospel sounds of the 20-member ensemble SIII and the Truth, the gritty soul/rap outfit, The Lab Addicts, who perform with a live band, and RAINation (The Real Artist Independent Nation), an emerging independent “organic hip-hop reggae” band that fuses together the sounds of hip-hop, funk, reggae, R&B and jazz. RAINation has recently opened for popular groups like The Roots, Kanye West, Common, Ludacris, and the Black Eyed Peas.

WBGO/Jazz 88.3 FM will host a special evening of jazz music on July 14 with the Marta Gomez Trio, Joris Teepe & the Groningen Art Ensemble, the Edmar Castaneda Trio, and Putumayo World Music presents Kermit Ruffins.

Featured DJ’s during the festival are DJ Chuck Mosely, DJ L Mani V, DJ Stephon Johnson, DJ Danny Ramirez, DJ Hard Hittin Harry, DJ Les Cole, Soundtech, D Life, and DJ Earon.

Featured on WNBC-TV and WABC-TV, JPMorgan Chase Sounds of the City brings together thousands of people from different ethnic groups and communities who live and work in Newark, as well as from beyond the City’s limits. Created in October 1998, this free after-work music series was the brainchild of a group of Newark residents, musicians, students and NJPAC staff, whose purpose was to help fulfill the Arts Center’s mission to be a place of access and involvement for local artists and audiences. “We have extended the great success of the New Jersey Performing Arts Center beyond its front doors,” said Evan White and Verushka Spirito, NJPAC’s co-Producers of JPMorgan Chase Sounds of the City 2005.

Many of the JPMorgan Chase Sounds of the City 2005 artists are New Jersey-based. Towns represented include Newark, Union, South Orange, Morristown, North Bergen, Clifton, Somerset, Holmdel, Spring Lake Heights, Fort Lee, Tenafly and Montclair. Artists such as Kermit Ruffins and Jef Lee Johnson hail from as far away as New Orleans and Pennsylvania respectively, while several more call New York their home.
A complete lists of artists performing at JPMorgan Chase Sounds of the City is at the end of this release.

New Jersey Fact:
"New Jersey is a small state on the eastern seaboard halfway between Honest John Lindsay and the Liberty Bell. It is best known for its turnpike, Atlantic City, Imamu Baraka, Newark Airport and the Morro Castle disaster. Most of its leaders are in jail for stealing money...."

Over thirty years ago, this was how a New York Times writer described New Jersey. The only things that have changed are that now Bloomberg has Lindsay's old job and Amiri Baraka figured out somewhere along the line that it's not too swift for an atheist to use a religious title.
