FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: September 12, 2003
Contact: Jim Cerny (973) 848-1000, ext. 109
NEWARK, NJ, September 12-The Pennsylvania Road Warriors scored twice in the
first inning and defeated the Newark Bears, 2-1, in the nightcap of a
doubleheader Friday night at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium, earning a
split of the twin bill. Newark had won the opener, 2-1.
With two outs and no one on base in the first inning, the Road Warriors
loaded the bases against Bears starter Andy Hazlett and then scored their
two runs on Omar Rosario's two-run single to left field.
Hazlett, in his first start of the season, was the hard-luck loser. Hazlett
(1-3) pitched a season-high five innings, allowing 2 runs and 5 hits. He
struck out five batters and walked one. Matt McClellan tossed two scoreless
innings in relief.
Newark scored their lone run in the fourth inning on a Pete Maestrales
sacrifice fly. Pennsylvania relievers Micah Mangrum (2-3) and Mike Perkins
(4th save) set down the final nine Bears batters in order to close out the
game.
The Bears won the opener of the doubleheader, 2-1, as Alberto Castillo (7-8)
tossed six strong innings, allowing only one unearned run. Reggie Harris
left the bases loaded in the ninth inning to earn his 8th save of the
season.
Former New Jersey Devils defenseman Ken Daneyko will make his professional
baseball debut Saturday night when he suits up for the Bears in their 6:05
PM start against the Road Warriors.

New Jersey Fact:
"New Jersey is a small state on the eastern seaboard halfway between Honest John Lindsay and the Liberty Bell. It is best known for its turnpike, Atlantic City, Imamu Baraka, Newark Airport and the Morro Castle disaster. Most of its leaders are in jail for stealing money...."
Over thirty years ago, this was how a New York Times writer described New Jersey. The only things that have changed are that now Bloomberg has Lindsay's old job and Amiri Baraka figured out somewhere along the line that it's not too swift for an atheist to use a religious title.
