NEWARK, NJ, September 7-The Long Island Ducks rallied from a 3-1 deficit to
defeat the Newark Bears, 10-5, Sunday afternoon at Bears and Eagles
Riverfront Stadium. By winning on Sunday the Ducks avoided being swept by
the Bears, who had won the first two games of this series, 5-2 and 4-1.
Trailing 3-1 in the sixth inning, the Ducks scored six runs on five hits and
were aided by two Bears errors to take over the game. Kimera Bartee led off
the fateful sixth with his eighth home run of the season. Third baseman
Kevin Baez gave the Ducks their first lead of the game with a two-out,
two-run single off of reliever Alex Pena (0-2) who was charged with the
loss, allowing four runs (two earned) in two-thirds of an inning.
Baez paced the Ducks offense, going 3-4 with a double, a run scored and 2
RBI. Patrick Lennon was 2-4 with a home run, his 6th, and 2 RBI and Elvis
Pena drove in two runs for Long Island.
Bears starter Rolando Viera pitched well, but received a no-decision. He
tossed a season-high 5.1 innings, allowing three runs (two earned) and five
hits. Viera pitched out of a bases-loaded, two-out jam in the 2nd inning by
getting Baez to fly out to center field.
For Newark Eddie Lara was 2-5 with two doubles and 2 RBI and Mike Piercy
went 1-3 with a sacrifice fly and 3 runs-batted-in.
The Bears have an off-day Monday and then begin the final week of the
regular season on Tuesday with a game in Bridgeport against the Bluefish.
Jaime Navarro (10-5) will make the start for the Bears that night.

New Jersey Fact:
"New Jersey is a small state on the eastern seaboard halfway between Honest John Lindsay and the Liberty Bell. It is best known for its turnpike, Atlantic City, Imamu Baraka, Newark Airport and the Morro Castle disaster. Most of its leaders are in jail for stealing money...."
Over thirty years ago, this was how a New York Times writer described New Jersey. The only things that have changed are that now Bloomberg has Lindsay's old job and Amiri Baraka figured out somewhere along the line that it's not too swift for an atheist to use a religious title.
