Newark Bears Web Site

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: September 7, 2003
Contact: Jim Cerny (973) 848-1000, ext. 109

NEWARK, NJ, September 7-Newark Bears outfielder Wil Quintana and pitcher Jaime Navarro were saluted before this afternoon's game versus the Long Island Ducks at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium for their 2003 on-field performances.

Quintana was named as the team's Most Valuable Player and received a Wittnauer watch courtesy of Carbo International Jewelers of Newark. Navarro was selected as the Bears' Pitcher of the Year and was presented with a trophy courtesy of La Tribuna newspaper.

The 25 year-old Quintana, an Atlantic League all star for the second consecutive season in 2003, to date has hit a career-high 24 home runs with 69 runs-batted-in. He is also batting .249 with 42 extra-base hits this season. Quintana currently ranks second in the league in home runs, two behind league-leader Juan Thomas of Atlantic City.

Navarro, who has twelve years of experience at the Major League level, owns a team-best ten victories in 2003 despite the fact that he did not join the team until mid-June. The veteran right-hander has a 10-5 won-lost record and a 4.17 ERA in 16 starts and 116.2 innings of work. Navarro has also struck out 93 batters and walked only 25 on the season. He has the fifth most victories in the Atlantic League so far this year.

The Bears will play their final four home games of 2003 beginning on Friday, September the 12th with a doubleheader against the Pennsylvania Road Warriors beginning at 6:05 PM. On Saturday the 13th, gates will open at 4:05 PM for the 6:05 PM game against the Road Warriors so that fans can watch former New Jersey Devils defenseman Ken Daneyko take batting practice with the team before he makes his professional baseball debut later that night.

Fans may purchase Newark Bears tickets at the team's box office, online at NewarkBears.com or by calling (973) 483-6900.

New Jersey Fact:
"New Jersey is a small state on the eastern seaboard halfway between Honest John Lindsay and the Liberty Bell. It is best known for its turnpike, Atlantic City, Imamu Baraka, Newark Airport and the Morro Castle disaster. Most of its leaders are in jail for stealing money...."

Over thirty years ago, this was how a New York Times writer described New Jersey. The only things that have changed are that now Bloomberg has Lindsay's old job and Amiri Baraka figured out somewhere along the line that it's not too swift for an atheist to use a religious title.
