CASTILLO SHUTS DOWN THE DUCKS, 4-1

Newark Bears Web Site

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: September 6, 2003 Contact: Jim Cerny (973) 848-1000, ext. 109

NEWARK, NJ, September 6-Alberto Castillo tossed a complete-game six-hitter as the Newark Bears defeated the Long Island Ducks for the second night in a row, 4-1, Saturday night at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium.

Castillo, the Bears left-hander, allowed only an unearned run in the fourth inning when Danny Clyburn misplayed a fly ball in left field. Castillo (6-8), who earned a victory for the first time since August 12th, pitched his second complete game of the season, striking out five batters and walking one.

The Bears battered Ducks starter Brad Whitworth (5-8), chasing him in the fifth inning after he allowed four runs and eight hits in 4.1 innings of work. He allowed two home runs on the night, a solo blast to Ryan Minor in the first inning and a two-run shot to Eddie Lara in the fifth.

Offensively the Bears were led by Lara, who was 2-4 with his 9th home run and 2 RBI, Mike Piercy, who was 3-3 with an RBI and a run scored, and Eddy Martinez, who went 2-3 with a run scored.

The Bears look for the sweep of this three-game series Sunday afternoon at 1:35 PM as Rolando Viera (2-1) gets the start for Newark and Bobby Rodgers pitches for Long Island.

New Jersey Fact:
"New Jersey is a small state on the eastern seaboard halfway between Honest John Lindsay and the Liberty Bell. It is best known for its turnpike, Atlantic City, Imamu Baraka, Newark Airport and the Morro Castle disaster. Most of its leaders are in jail for stealing money...."

Over thirty years ago, this was how a New York Times writer described New Jersey. The only things that have changed are that now Bloomberg has Lindsay's old job and Amiri Baraka figured out somewhere along the line that it's not too swift for an atheist to use a religious title.
