BULLINGER WINS FIRST IN BEARS 5-2 VICTORY

Newark Bears Web Site

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: September 5, 2003
Contact: Jim Cerny (973) 848-1000, ext. 109

NEWARK, NJ, September 5-Former Major League right-hander Jim Bullinger allowed only one run over seven innings of work as the Newark Bears defeated the Long Island Ducks, 5-2, Friday night at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium.

The victory was Bullinger's (1-4) first of the season as he was making his sixth start since signing as a free agent. Bullinger allowed only a sacrifice fly to Kimera Bartee in the 4th inning to go along with three hits in his seven innings of work. He struck out three batters and walked two. After Alex Pena allowed one run in the eighth inning, Reggie Harris came out of the Bears bullpen and tossed a perfect ninth inning for his 6th save of the year.

Leading 3-2 in the bottom of the eighth inning, Newark scored a pair of very important insurance runs as Pito Ramirez delivered an RBI single and Jay Laflair walked with the bases loaded to force in another run. Laflair finished the night 2-3 with two singles, a walk and a season-high three runs-batted-in. He had delivered run-scoring singles in both the second and fourth innings.

Ramirez was 2-3 with a double, one RBI and two runs scored for the Bears while teammate Pete Maestrales went 2-4 with a double, his 6th home run and one run-batted-in.

Elvis Pena was 1-3 with a walk, a single, two runs scored and his league-leading 40th and 41st stolen bases for Long Island.

The Bears and Ducks will meet Saturday night as Alberto Castillo (5-8) pitches for Newark and Rich Kelley (0-2) starts for Long Island.

New Jersey Fact:
"New Jersey is a small state on the eastern seaboard halfway between Honest John Lindsay and the Liberty Bell. It is best known for its turnpike, Atlantic City, Imamu Baraka, Newark Airport and the Morro Castle disaster. Most of its leaders are in jail for stealing money...."

Over thirty years ago, this was how a New York Times writer described New Jersey. The only things that have changed are that now Bloomberg has Lindsay's old job and Amiri Baraka figured out somewhere along the line that it's not too swift for an atheist to use a religious title.
