BEARS AND PATRIOTS SPLIT DOUBLEHEADER
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: September 3, 2003
Contact: Jim Cerny (973) 848-1000, ext. 109
NEWARK, NJ, September 3-The Newark Bears came within three outs of sweeping
a doubleheader from the Somerset Patriots Wednesday afternoon at Bears and
Eagles Riverfront Stadium, but had to settle for a split after the Patriots
rallied for a 7-4 victory in the nightcap. The Bears had won the opener,
4-1.
Former Major League right-hander Jaime Navarro (10-5) took a 4-2 lead into
the seventh and final inning of the nightcap, but he allowed five runs in
the frame to lose in shocking fashion. Robinson Cancel led off the seventh
with his 12th home run and the next batter, Michael Warner, fouled off three
full count pitches before tying the game with a solo home run, his 6th of
the year, to right field. The Patriots took the lead for good on Edgard
Clemente's ensuing two-run double.
Newark had erased a 2-0 deficit against former Major League pitcher Jason
Dickson in the bottom of the sixth inning for what looked to be a dramatic
victory for the Bears. Newark scored four times in the sixth inning, tying
the game on Wil Quintana's two-run home run, his 24th of the season, and
taking the lead on Eddy Martinez' two-out, two-run single. However the 4-2
lead did not hold up.
In the opener Rolando Viera and Alex Pena combined on a three-hitter as the
Bears defeated the Patriots, 4-1. Viera, making a spot start, tossed five
strong innings, allowing only one run and two hits. Viera (2-1) left the
bases loaded in the fifth inning, inducing Eric Martins to ground out for
the final out. Pena earned his first save of the season, striking out three
batters in two scoreless innings.
Ryan Minor was 2-3 with his 3rd home run of the season, 2 RBI ad 2 runs
scored in the opener for the Bears. Outfielder Hipolito Martinez was 2-3 in
the opener and 1-3 in the nightcap, extending his hitting streak to eight
consecutive games.
With the split the Patriots remain two games out of first place in the south
division standings, pending the Camden Riversharks result later Wednesday
evening, with a week-and-a-half remaining in the season.

New Jersey Fact:
"New Jersey is a small state on the eastern seaboard halfway between Honest John Lindsay and the Liberty Bell. It is best known for its turnpike, Atlantic City, Imamu Baraka, Newark Airport and the Morro Castle disaster. Most of its leaders are in jail for stealing money...."
Over thirty years ago, this was how a New York Times writer described New Jersey. The only things that have changed are that now Bloomberg has Lindsay's old job and Amiri Baraka figured out somewhere along the line that it's not too swift for an atheist to use a religious title.
