FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: September 3, 2003
NEWARK, NJ, September 3-The Newark Bears today announced the signing of
right-handed pitcher Tommy Parks to a contract. The former punter in the
National Football League will be in uniform today as the Bears host the
Somerset Patriots in a doubleheader at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium.
The 32 year-old Parks has not pitched professionally since 1998. From 1995
through 1998 he pitched in independent leagues, including the
Texas-Louisiana League, compiling a 13-12 won-lost record and five saves in
68 career games.
A two-sport star at Mississippi State University, Parks has also played
professional football. He was a punter with the New York Jets during the
2001 season and he also played professionally in the United Football League
in Taiwan.
The native of Tupelo, MS, which is also the birthplace of Elvis Presley, has
been working out with the Bears for several weeks after an impressive tryout
session until being signed today.
