NEWARK, NJ, August 27-The Atlantic City Surf pounded four home runs and right-hander Matt Wagner earned the win against his former team as the Surf defeated the Newark Bears, 11-4, Wednesday night at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium. The Bears have now lost three straight games and the Surf have won four in a row.

Wagner (10-6), an all star with the Bears this season, was traded to the Surf on August 15th. He made his second start for the Surf this evening and picked up his first victory for his new team. Wagner allowed four runs and eight hits in seven innings of work, striking out one batter. He allowed a pair of two-run home runs, one in the first inning and one in the third inning, to Bears left fielder Danny Clyburn, who now has hit 21 home runs on the season.

The Surf had eleven hits off of four Bears pitchers including home runs by Ric Johnson (his 1st), Raul Marval (his 11th), Ben Candleria (his 10th) and Jose Velazquez (his 5th). Third baseman Brandon Jackson was 2-3 at the plate with two doubles and 4 runs-batted-in.

Bears starter Tom Stepka (8-9) took the loss, allowing seven runs and eight hits in six innings of work. Stepka struck out four batters and walked a season-high four.

Juan Lorenzo continued his hot hitting for the Bears, going 304 with a double and two runs scored.

The Bears and Surf will play again Thursday evening at 7:05 PM as Alberto Castillo (5-7) will start for the Bears and Jason Jacome (2-2) goes for the Surf.

New Jersey Fact:
"New Jersey is a small state on the eastern seaboard halfway between Honest John Lindsay and the Liberty Bell. It is best known for its turnpike, Atlantic City, Imamu Baraka, Newark Airport and the Morro Castle disaster. Most of its leaders are in jail for stealing money...."

Over thirty years ago, this was how a New York Times writer described New Jersey. The only things that have changed are that now Bloomberg has Lindsay's old job and Amiri Baraka figured out somewhere along the line that it's not too swift for an atheist to use a religious title.
