NEWARK, NJ, August 20-The Newark Bears broke a five-game losing streak and
Calvin Maduro won for the first time as a Bear as Newark defeated the Camden
Riversharks, 10-2, Wednesday night at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium.
Maduro, the former Major League right-hander, lost his first seven decisions
this season before earning the victory this evening. Though he allowed at
least one base hit in all seven innings that he pitched, Maduro persevered
and allowed only two runs on nine hits. Maduro struck out a season-high nine
batters and walked two. In his final inning, the seventh, Maduro pitched out
of a jam that saw runners at second and third and nobody out and he did not
allow a run.
The Bears backed up Maduro with an eighteen-hit attack. Juan Lorenzo paced
the offense with a 4-5 night, driving in two runs. Shortstop Eddy Martinez
was 2-3 with a home run, his 5th, and three runs-batted-in while teammates
Danny Clyburn and Wil Quintana both had two hits, including solo home runs.
Every batter in the Bears lineup had at least one hit and Newark totaled
nine extra-base hits in the game. The Bears blew the game open with a
five-run third inning in which Newark scored four times with two men out.
The Bears will open up a six-game road trip with a game against the Long
Island Ducks Thursday night. Jim Bullinger (0-1) will make the start for
Newark.

New Jersey Fact:
"New Jersey is a small state on the eastern seaboard halfway between Honest John Lindsay and the Liberty Bell. It is best known for its turnpike, Atlantic City, Imamu Baraka, Newark Airport and the Morro Castle disaster. Most of its leaders are in jail for stealing money...."
Over thirty years ago, this was how a New York Times writer described New Jersey. The only things that have changed are that now Bloomberg has Lindsay's old job and Amiri Baraka figured out somewhere along the line that it's not too swift for an atheist to use a religious title.
