Newark Bears Web Site

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: August 19, 2003
Contact: Jim Cerny (973) 848-1000, ext. 109

NEWARK, NJ, August 19-Angel Pena drove in five runs and teammate Bryon Gainey drove in three as the Camden Riversharks defeated the Newark Bears, 10-6, Tuesday night at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium. The Bears have now lost five games in a row.

Pena was 3-4 with a home run, his tenth, and the five runs-batted-in. He has seven hits in the last two days against Newark. Gainey was 3-5 with a home run, his 18th, and the three RBI.

Camden scored four runs in the first inning off of Jaime Navarro and never trailed in the game. The Bears closed to within one run at 4-3 in the third inning, but left the bases loaded and never got closer. Navarro (8-4) pitched seven innings and allowed eight runs (seven earned) and ten hits. He struck out eight batters and walked three.

Mark Nussbeck, the Riversharks starter, lasted only three innings in which he threw 93 pitches. Nussbeck left with a 5-4 lead, but received a no-decision because he did not pitch the required five innings. Cliff Foster (4-1) pitched four scoreless innings in relief to pick up the win. He allowed only one base hit.

Newark's Danny Clyburn was 4-5 at the plate. He hit a two-run home run, his 17th of the season, in the ninth inning. Juan Lorenzo and Hipolito Martinez each had two hits for the Bears.

The Bears and Riversharks will play the finale of this series Wednesday night at 7:05 PM. Calvin Maduro (0-7) will pitch for the Bears and David Moraga (1-3) goes for the 'Sharks.

New Jersey Fact:
"New Jersey is a small state on the eastern seaboard halfway between Honest John Lindsay and the Liberty Bell. It is best known for its turnpike, Atlantic City, Imamu Baraka, Newark Airport and the Morro Castle disaster. Most of its leaders are in jail for stealing money...."

Over thirty years ago, this was how a New York Times writer described New Jersey. The only things that have changed are that now Bloomberg has Lindsay's old job and Amiri Baraka figured out somewhere along the line that it's not too swift for an atheist to use a religious title.
