HOME RUN RECORDS FALL IN BEARS 14-4 WIN

NEWARK, NJ, August 13-The Newark Bears hit five home runs, three by league-leader Michael Coleman, as Newark defeated the Pennsylvania Road Warriors, 14-4, Wednesday afternoon at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium. The Bears, who beat the Road Warriors 6-0 Tuesday night, have now won back-to-back games for the first time in the second half of the season.

Coleman, who leads the Atlantic League with 23 home runs this season, tied the Bears franchise record for most home runs in a single game that was originally set by Ozzie Canseco on August 30, 2000 against Aberdeen. Coleman hit a two-run blast in the first inning off of Pat Daneker that nearly touched off a brawl when Pennsylvania catcher Mike Lopez-Cao began jawing with Coleman when he crossed the plate. The benches emptied, but no punches were thrown.

In a highly-charged atmosphere, Coleman hit a second two-run home run off of Daneker in the 5th inning and then tied Canseco's home run mark with a two-run shot in the 6th off of Kevin McClain. Coleman finished the game 3-4 with 3 home runs, 6 runs-batted-in and 4 runs scored

In the eighth inning Bears right-fielder Pito Ramirez unloaded a three-run home run off of Mike Perkins, making him the Bears all-time career home run leader. The blast was the 55th in Ramirez' Bears career, which began in 1998. He passed Canseco on the all-time list. Ramirez finished the game 2-4 with the home run, his 5th, 3 RBI and 3 runs scored.

The Bears set a season-high with ten extra-base hits amongst their sixteen hits. Catcher Tim DeCinces was 4-5 with two doubles and an RBI; Wil Quintana was 2-5 with a solo home run, his 16th; and Eddie Lara went 2-4 with three runs scored. Ryan Minor, who was re-signed by the Bears earlier in the day, was 2-2 with a double, a walk, a sacrifice fly and three runs-batted-in.

Jaime Navarro (8-3) picked up the win for Newark, tossing seven innings and allowing two runs and seven hits.

New Jersey Fact:
"New Jersey is a small state on the eastern seaboard halfway between Honest John Lindsay and the Liberty Bell. It is best known for its turnpike, Atlantic City, Imamu Baraka, Newark Airport and the Morro Castle disaster. Most of its leaders are in jail for stealing money...."

Over thirty years ago, this was how a New York Times writer described New Jersey. The only things that have changed are that now Bloomberg has Lindsay's old job and Amiri Baraka figured out somewhere along the line that it's not too swift for an atheist to use a religious title.
