CASTILLO HELPS BEARS END SKID WITH 6-0 VICTORY

Newark Bears Web Site

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: August 12, 2003
Contact: Jim Cerny (973) 848-1000, ext. 109

NEWARK, NJ, August 12-Alberto Castillo and Reggie Harris combined on a six-hit shutout as the Newark Bears ended a five-game losing streak with a 6-0 victory over the Pennsylvania Road Warriors Tuesday night at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium. It was the ninth shutout for the Bears this season, their fourth against Pennsylvania.

Castillo (5-5) tossed eight innings and struck out eight batters, tying a season high. He allowed six hits and three walks, while leaving ten runners on base. Castillo left at least one man on base in each inning and he left the bases loaded in the second inning when he struck out Jose Espino to close out the frame. Harris pitched a perfect ninth inning.

Newark scored a run in the first inning on Danny Clyburn's two-out, run-scoring double and then scored at least one run in the each of the final four innings. Pete Maestrales was 2-3 with a two-run home run, his fourth of the season, in the 6th inning.

Eddie Lara returned to the Bears lineup after sitting out the weekend series in Somerset with a sore hand and went 3-5 with a double and a run scored. Michael Coleman had two hits and an RBI; and Juan Lorenzo extended his hitting streak to ten consecutive games with a 4th inning single.

The Bears and Road Warriors will face one another Wednesday afternoon in a special 12:05 PM matinee game. Jaime Navarro (7-3) will start for Newark.

New Jersey Fact:
"New Jersey is a small state on the eastern seaboard halfway between Honest John Lindsay and the Liberty Bell. It is best known for its turnpike, Atlantic City, Imamu Baraka, Newark Airport and the Morro Castle disaster. Most of its leaders are in jail for stealing money...."

Over thirty years ago, this was how a New York Times writer described New Jersey. The only things that have changed are that now Bloomberg has Lindsay's old job and Amiri Baraka figured out somewhere along the line that it's not too swift for an atheist to use a religious title.
