NEWARK, NJ, August 7-The Newark Bears lost the rubber game of their
three-game series against the Nashua Pride, 6-3, Thursday night at Bears and
Eagles Riverfront Stadium. The game was halted in the bottom of the eighth
inning because of unplayable field conditions caused by rain.
Nashua built leads of 3-0 and 4-1 only to see the Bears rally to within a
run at 4-3 in the fifth inning before pulling away for good. Jaime Navarro
(7-3) pitched all eight innings for the Bears, allowing six runs (five
earned) on ten hits. He struck out eight batters and walked one in his
second complete game of the season.
Michael Coleman of the Bears was 3-4 at the plate with a solo home run in
the fourth inning, his league-lead-tying 19th of the season. Shortstop Juan
Lorenzo extended his hitting streak to six consecutive games, going 2-3 for
Newark.
Joe Kilburg and Tim Garland both had two hits and a run-batted-in for
Nashua. Chris Petersen and Dave Francia chipped in with a pair of hits, as
well.
The Bears will open up a three-game series in Somerset against the Patriots
Friday night at 7:05 PM. Former Major League right-hander Calvin Maduro

New Jersey Fact:
"New Jersey is a small state on the eastern seaboard halfway between Honest John Lindsay and the Liberty Bell. It is best known for its turnpike, Atlantic City, Imamu Baraka, Newark Airport and the Morro Castle disaster. Most of its leaders are in jail for stealing money...."
Over thirty years ago, this was how a New York Times writer described New Jersey. The only things that have changed are that now Bloomberg has Lindsay's old job and Amiri Baraka figured out somewhere along the line that it's not too swift for an atheist to use a religious title.
