FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: August 6, 2003
NEWARK, NJ, August 6-The Newark Bears today announced the signing of former
Major League right-handed pitcher Jim Bullinger to a contract. Bullinger
will join the team today and will be in uniform this evening when the Bears
host the Nashua Pride at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium beginning at
7:05 PM.
The 37 year-old Bullinger spent parts of six seasons at the big league
level, appearing in 186 games while pitching for the Chicago Cubs, Montreal
Expos and Seattle Mariners. His lifetime record is 35-41 in the Majors with
a 5.06 ERA. He was originally selected by the Cubs in the 9th round of the
1986 draft.
In 1994, while pitching for the Cubs, Bullinger posted a 6-2 mark with 2
saves and a 3.60 ERA in 33 games (10 starts). A year later with the Cubs he
was 12-8 with a 4.14 ERA, making 24 starts. He picked up seven saves out of
Cubs bullpen in 1992.
"This is yet another key addition to our pitching staff," said Bears
vice-president and general manager Chris Bryan. "Jim has a lot of experience
to go along with a great right arm. We are excited to add him to the mix."
Bullinger has pitched in the Atlantic League before, posting a 6-1 record
and a 2.28 ERA in 9 games with Long Island in 2001; and going a combined
6-10 in 23 starts for Long Island and Somerset a year ago.
