Contact: Jim Cerny (973) 848-1000, ext. 109

NEWARK, NJ, August 5-Eddie Lara had four hits and drove in two runs as the Newark Bears ended their five-game losing streak with an 8-4 victory over the Nashua Pride Tuesday night at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium. The losing skid was the second worst this season for Newark, which lost six games in a row in a late-May to early-June stretch.

After falling behind, 2-0, in the top of the first inning, the Bears scored twice in the bottom of the first and four more times in the bottom of the second inning to grab the lead for good, 6-2. Michael Coleman delivered a run-scoring double in the first and then crushed a three-run home run, his 18th of the season, in the second. Coleman was 2-5 with the home run and 4 RBI on the night.

Lara, who was 4-5 with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored at the plate on Tuesday, has twelve hits in his last 20 plate appearances. He singled and scored in the first inning, had an RBI single and scored again in the second, singled in the seventh inning and had a run-scoring single in the eighth.

Newark banged out twelve hits on the night. Curtis Goodwin finished 2-4 with a walk, a run scored, a stolen base and an RBI. Juan Lorenzo, who has hit safely in 6 of 7 games, was 2-4 with two runs scored.

Tom Stepka (7-7) earned the win for Newark, allowing 4 runs and 6 hits in 6 innings of work. The Bears bullpen, consisting of Andy Hazlett, Hut Smith and Reggie Harris, tossed three shutout innings. Harris recorded the final four outs in order for his third save of the season.

Glenn Murray had two doubles and an RBI for Nashua. D.J. Boston also had two hits in four times up.

The Bears and the Pride will play the middle game of their three-game series Wednesday night as Alberto Castillo (4-4) will pitch for Newark and Nashua will counter with Carlos Chantres (6-3).

New Jersey Fact:
"New Jersey is a small state on the eastern seaboard halfway between Honest John Lindsay and the Liberty Bell. It is best known for its turnpike, Atlantic City, Imamu Baraka, Newark Airport and the Morro Castle disaster. Most of its leaders are in jail for stealing money...."

Over thirty years ago, this was how a New York Times writer described New Jersey. The only things that have changed are that now Bloomberg has Lindsay's old job and Amiri Baraka figured out somewhere along the line that it's not too swift for an atheist to use a religious title.
