NEWARK, NJ, August 3rd - The Newark Bears lost their fifth straight game Sunday afternoon at the Den against the Bridgeport Bluefish by the score of 4-2. The loss completed a weekend series sweep of the Bears by the Bluefish.

The Bluefish scored two runs in the top of the 2nd inning highlighted by four straight two-out hits. Second baseman Angel Espada doubled to right field followed by an RBI single by catcher Cesar Devarez scoring Espada. Right fielder Rodney Lindsey singled to right field and he and Devarez each then advanced one base on a wild pitch by Wagner. Lindsey scored on an RBI single by center fielder Rolo Avila to give Bridgeport an early 2-0 lead. Bridgeport added one run in the top of the 5th inning and another run in the top of the 6th on a solo home run by Devarez to left field off Bears reliever Rolando Viera to give Bridgeport a 4-0 lead. Viera came on in relief of Bears starter Matt Wagner in the 5th inning, after he was ejected by home plate umpire Ken Starkey.

The Bears scored once in the 6th inning and once in the 7th. In the 6th, designated hitter Hipolito Martinez hit his first home run of the season, a solo shot to left field to cut the lead to 4-1. In the 7th, third baseman Paul Esposito doubled to left field and scored on an RBI single by shortstop Juan Lorenzo. Lorenzo, who signed with the Bears on July 29, has now hit safely in 5 of his last 6 games. Former Bears pitcher Tim Cain (3-2) picked up the win and Bobby Chouinard closed out the game for his second save of the year and of the series. Matt Wagner (9-5) suffered the loss for the Bears. Wagner had entered the game tied for fourth in the league in wins (9) and third in strikeouts (78).

The Bears continue their homestand Tuesday night with the first game of a three-game series against the Nashua Pride beginning at 7:05 PM. Tom Stepka (6-7, 3.87) will start for the Bears.

New Jersey Fact:
"New Jersey is a small state on the eastern seaboard halfway between Honest John Lindsay and the Liberty Bell. It is best known for its turnpike, Atlantic City, Imamu Baraka, Newark Airport and the Morro Castle disaster. Most of its leaders are in jail for stealing money...."

Over thirty years ago, this was how a New York Times writer described New Jersey. The only things that have changed are that now Bloomberg has Lindsay's old job and Amiri Baraka figured out somewhere along the line that it's not too swift for an atheist to use a religious title.
