NEWARK, NJ, August 1st -Despite a late rally in the 9th inning on a two-run home run by Pito Ramirez, the Newark Bears fell in 11 innings to the Bridgeport Bluefish 3-2 Friday night at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium in Newark, NJ. With his homerun, Ramirez tied former Bear Ozzie Canseco's all-time career Bears' home run record of 54.

Despite getting a no decision, Bears starter Jaime Navarro had his longest outing of the season, going nine innings and allowing six hits and two runs (none earned) and one walk while striking out seven.

The Bluefish scored one run in the 3rd inning, one in the 4th, and one in the top of the 11th. In the 11th, catcher Cesar Devarez hit a two-out double to left field off Bears reliever Reggie Harris and came around to score on an RBI single by second baseman Angel Espada. Shortstop Tony Rodriguez, along with Devarez and Espada each finished with an RBI apiece on the night for Bridgeport.

Bluefish starter T.J. Mathews retired fourteen Bears in a row in between a one out single by left fielder Ramirez in the fourth inning and a single by third baseman Jay LaFlair in the ninth inning. Later in the bottom of the ninth, Ramirez hit a two out, game tying two-run homerun (4) off of Mathews, which tied him with Ozzie Canseco for the all-time career home run record in a Bears uniform. Ramirez' last home run came on July 24th in the bottom of the 13th inning to win the game against Pennsylvania. Mike Guilfoyle (6-3) picked up the win and Bobby Chouinard picked up the save (1) for Bridgeport. Reggie Harris (0-1) suffered the loss for the Bears.

The Bears and Bluefish will meet Saturday night in the middle game of their three-game series at 6:05 PM at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium. Calvin Maduro (0-4) starts for the Bears and Kevin Henthorne (0-0) goes for the Bluefish.

New Jersey Fact:
"New Jersey is a small state on the eastern seaboard halfway between Honest John Lindsay and the Liberty Bell. It is best known for its turnpike, Atlantic City, Imamu Baraka, Newark Airport and the Morro Castle disaster. Most of its leaders are in jail for stealing money...."

Over thirty years ago, this was how a New York Times writer described New Jersey. The only things that have changed are that now Bloomberg has Lindsay's old job and Amiri Baraka figured out somewhere along the line that it's not too swift for an atheist to use a religious title.
