NEWARK, NJ, July 25-The Newark Bears today announced the signing of former Major League outfielder Curtis Goodwin to a contract. Goodwin will be in uniform this evening when the Bears host the Pennsylvania Road Warriors in a 7:05 game at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium.

The 30 year-old Goodwin has played in the Major Leagues with the Baltimore Orioles, Cincinnati Reds, Colorado Rockies, Chicago Cubs and Toronto Blue Jays. In 431 games at the big league level, Goodwin owns a .248 batting average with 3 home runs, 56 runs-batted-in and 66 stolen bases.

Originally a 12th round selection of the Orioles in the 1991 draft, Goodwin made his Major League debut in 1995 with Baltimore. That season he batted .263 with 1 home run, 11 doubles, 3 triples, 22 stolen bases and 24 RBI in 87 games. He also stole 22 bases while playing for the Reds in 1997.

Last year Goodwin began the season playing for Newark, but after twelve games with the Bears he signed with Berkshire in the Northern League where he batted .336 with 9 extra-base hits and 13 RBI in 37 games. He finished the 2002 campaign playing for Sonoma City in the Western League where he batted .241 with 9 RBI in 21 games.

New Jersey Fact:
"New Jersey is a small state on the eastern seaboard halfway between Honest John Lindsay and the Liberty Bell. It is best known for its turnpike, Atlantic City, Imamu Baraka, Newark Airport and the Morro Castle disaster. Most of its leaders are in jail for stealing money...."

Over thirty years ago, this was how a New York Times writer described New Jersey. The only things that have changed are that now Bloomberg has Lindsay's old job and Amiri Baraka figured out somewhere along the line that it's not too swift for an atheist to use a religious title.
