NEWARK, NJ, July 25-The Newark Bears today announced the signing of former
Major League outfielder Curtis Goodwin to a contract. Goodwin will be in
uniform this evening when the Bears host the Pennsylvania Road Warriors in a
7:05 game at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium.
The 30 year-old Goodwin has played in the Major Leagues with the Baltimore
Orioles, Cincinnati Reds, Colorado Rockies, Chicago Cubs and Toronto Blue
Jays. In 431 games at the big league level, Goodwin owns a .248 batting
average with 3 home runs, 56 runs-batted-in and 66 stolen bases.
Originally a 12th round selection of the Orioles in the 1991 draft, Goodwin
made his Major League debut in 1995 with Baltimore. That season he batted
.263 with 1 home run, 11 doubles, 3 triples, 22 stolen bases and 24 RBI in
87 games. He also stole 22 bases while playing for the Reds in 1997.
Last year Goodwin began the season playing for Newark, but after twelve
games with the Bears he signed with Berkshire in the Northern League where
he batted .336 with 9 extra-base hits and 13 RBI in 37 games. He finished
the 2002 campaign playing for Sonoma City in the Western League where he
batted .241 with 9 RBI in 21 games.
