ROAD WARRIORS RALLY FOR 6-5 WIN OVER THE BEARS

Newark Bears Web Site

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: July 24, 2003
Contact: Jim Cerny (973) 848-1000, ext. 109

NEWARK, NJ, July 24-The Pennsylvania Road Warriors scored four times in the eighth inning to rally for a 6-5 win over the Newark Bears Thursday night at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium. The Bears have lost three games in a row, while the Road Warriors have now won 7 of their last 9.

Trailing 5-2 entering the eighth inning, Pennsylvania scored a run on two singles and an error with one out against Bears starter Matt Wagner. Relief pitcher Damon Ponce de Leon (0-4) came out of the Bears bullpen and gave up a three-run home run to the first batter he faced, right-fielder Jerry Amador, to give the Road Warriors their 6-5 lead. The home run was Amador's 15th of the season.

The Bears had a chance to at least tie the game in the bottom of the eighth when they had runners on second and third and nobody out, but failed to score.

Bears left-fielder Peto Ramirez was 3-4 with a home run, his second of the season, and one RBI. Teammate Jay Laflair was 3-4 with an RBI. Michael Coleman was 1-4 with a home run, his 17th, and one run-batted-in.

Gary Johnson was 3-5 with a stolen base for the Road Warriors.

The Bears and Road Warriors will wrap up their three-game series Friday night with Tom Stepka (6-6) starting for Newark and Jason Dennis (1-0) going for Pennsylvania.

New Jersey Fact:
"New Jersey is a small state on the eastern seaboard halfway between Honest John Lindsay and the Liberty Bell. It is best known for its turnpike, Atlantic City, Imamu Baraka, Newark Airport and the Morro Castle disaster. Most of its leaders are in jail for stealing money...."

Over thirty years ago, this was how a New York Times writer described New Jersey. The only things that have changed are that now Bloomberg has Lindsay's old job and Amiri Baraka figured out somewhere along the line that it's not too swift for an atheist to use a religious title.
