Contact: Jim Cerny (973) 848-1000, ext. 109

NEWARK, NJ, July 21-The Somerset Patriots pounded out sixteen hits en-route to a 9-1 victory over the Newark Bears Monday night at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium. Somerset's win was a payback of sorts as the Bears had sixteen hits Sunday in an 11-4 win in the opener of this three-game series.

Tony Gsell and Mitch Meluskey each drove in three runs for the Patriots, who are 7-4 in the second half of the season. Gsell was 2-4 at the plate and hit a three-run home run in the sixth inning. Meluskey was 1-5, but had an RBI single in the first inning and a pair of run-scoring ground outs thereafter.

Somerset second baseman Emiliano Escandon was 4-5 with three singles, a double, 2 runs scored and two stolen bases. On the night the Patriots swiped four bases.

Justin Jensen (4-1) retired the final fifteen Bears batters he faced in recording his fourth win of the season. Jensen allowed one run, on a Mike Piercy RBI single in the 3rd inning, and three hits while striking out five batters and walking one.

Bears starter Jaime Navarro (6-2) took the loss. He was hit hard, allowing twelve hits and five runs in six innings of work. Andy Hazlett allowed four runs in three innings of relief, including a pair of home runs.

The Bears and Patriots will play the rubber game of their three-game set Tuesday night with a pair of former Major Leaguers on the mound. Calvin Maduro (0-2) will start for the Bears and Steve Falteisek (4-4) goes for the Patriots.

New Jersey Fact:
"New Jersey is a small state on the eastern seaboard halfway between Honest John Lindsay and the Liberty Bell. It is best known for its turnpike, Atlantic City, Imamu Baraka, Newark Airport and the Morro Castle disaster. Most of its leaders are in jail for stealing money...."

Over thirty years ago, this was how a New York Times writer described New Jersey. The only things that have changed are that now Bloomberg has Lindsay's old job and Amiri Baraka figured out somewhere along the line that it's not too swift for an atheist to use a religious title.
