NEWARK, NJ, July 20-The Newark Bears exploded for nine runs in the sixth inning as Newark defeated the Somerset Patriots, 11-4, Sunday afternoon at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium. The Bears are now 5-5 in the second half of the season.

The big blows in Newark's nine-run inning, which turned a 2-1 Bears lead into an 11-1 Bears lead, were Danny Clyburn's grand slam home run and Eddie Martinez' three-run triple. Clyburn's bomb was his 13th home run of the season and Newark's fourth grand slam of the year. Paul Esposito contributed two hits and an RBI in the big inning as the Bears sent 13 men to bat.

All nine runs in the sixth were scored off of Somerset reliever Cameron Smith, who allowed four hits and four walks in the inning. Five of the runs were unearned because of a pair of fielding errors by the Patriots.

Martinez and Esposito each finished the day with three hits in five at-bats. Martinez drove in four runs, while Esposito drove in two and scored three runs. Clyburn was 2-5 with the home run and four runs-batted-in as the Bears banged out 16 hits in the game.

Alberto Castillo (4-2) earned the victory for the Bears, tossing seven innings of three-run, six-hit ball. He struck out three and walked one.

The Bears and Patriots will meet Monday night in the middle game of their three-game series. Jaime Navarro (6-1) starts for the Bears and Justin Jensen (3-1) goes for the Patriots.

New Jersey Fact:
"New Jersey is a small state on the eastern seaboard halfway between Honest John Lindsay and the Liberty Bell. It is best known for its turnpike, Atlantic City, Imamu Baraka, Newark Airport and the Morro Castle disaster. Most of its leaders are in jail for stealing money...."

Over thirty years ago, this was how a New York Times writer described New Jersey. The only things that have changed are that now Bloomberg has Lindsay's old job and Amiri Baraka figured out somewhere along the line that it's not too swift for an atheist to use a religious title.
