NEWARK, NJ, July 12-The Atlantic City Surf crushed four home runs en-route to a 9-3 victory over the Newark Bears Saturday night at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium. Both teams are now 1-1 in the second half of the season.

Designated hitter Juan Thomas unloaded a pair of home runs, his 8th and 9th of the season, to lead the Surf attack. Thomas hit a solo shot off Bears starter Calvin Maduro in the second inning and a three-run blast off of Maduro in the third inning. Maduro (0-1) also allowed two-run home runs to Chad Gambill in the second and Raul Marval in the sixth inning.

Maduro pitched 5.2 innings and allowed all nine runs on eight hits. Surf starter Andy Zwirchitz (7-3) also tossed 5.2 innings in getting the win. He allowed 2 earned runs on six hits.

Eddy Martinez led the Bears offense with a 3-4 night. He also had a double and a run-batted-in. Michael Coleman extended his hitting streak to 13 consecutive games with a solo home run in the fourth inning, his 14th of the season.

The Bears and Surf will play the rubber game of this three-game series Sunday afternoon as Newark will start Matt Wagner (7-3) and Atlantic City will counter with Anthony Chavez.

New Jersey Fact:
"New Jersey is a small state on the eastern seaboard halfway between Honest John Lindsay and the Liberty Bell. It is best known for its turnpike, Atlantic City, Imamu Baraka, Newark Airport and the Morro Castle disaster. Most of its leaders are in jail for stealing money...."

Over thirty years ago, this was how a New York Times writer described New Jersey. The only things that have changed are that now Bloomberg has Lindsay's old job and Amiri Baraka figured out somewhere along the line that it's not too swift for an atheist to use a religious title.
